Tales From The Knotty Knitter - Guest Post By The Knotty Knitter

On the morning of the yarn bomb, I walked into the office and said hello to The Detangler.

I asked her what she was up to (other than work), and she said,
"Oh, just putting out the media release for today's yarn bomb"
"Huh, yarn what????" I replied
"The Knitting Kninjas are doing a charity yarn bomb!"
"Okay.... Not sure what that is but I want to do it..?"
"This one's a charity yarn bomb, we leave knitted items that can be picked up and they're tagged with your ninja name, you could meet us at Salvation Army downtown."

I felt disappointed I didn't know about the event beforehand but as a newbie knitter most of my knitting is full of knots.

I went back to my class, disappointed I wouldn't be able to contribute something to the charity yarn bomb.

I sat down with my coffee, my glasses misting with the steam and as the bottom of the my glasses cleared, a pair of 6 mm sized knitting needles laying in a cross appeared in my view. Like x marks the spot, some chunky blue yarn lay beyond it.

"Should I start something?" I think to myself. My hands itches to pick up the needles, but I looked at the clock thinking about how could I, a newbie knitter, finish a scarf by 4:30?

Before I could even answer this question to myself, my hands are reaching towards the knitting needles and I've cast on 15 stitches and have done 3 rows before class has started.

Class has started?? I use my break and lunch to knit. Pretty soon I have 1/2 a scarf hanging off my knitting needles and lunch isn't even done. I turn the speed on and by the end of lunch I'm almost at the end if my yarn. At this point, I think, I can do this! My intensity has spread to 5 other students and we are all madly twisting yarn into shapes that can be worn.

Lunch comes to a close and I'm down to my last strand of yarn and I breathe a sigh of relief. My membership into the Knitting Kninjas is assured by KninjaNeedles8 with the completion of my item and I get a name and my tag is printed and laminated by KnitMama.

Now I'm like my students and I'm watching the clock, counting down the minutes until I can leave school and get my item tagged and left for someone.

Finally, the moment of knotty knitting truth arrives. I tag. I left. I conquered.

The morale of the story is, don't get knotted up by your own thinking, with two needles you can knit anything into something great.

Hope You Enjoyed World Kindness Day

Has anyone spotted these lovely knit items?  These were all placed in front of the Salvation Army on Simcoe Street in Peterborough, ON last night (November 13th, 2014), by some of our Kninjas.

Alright, let's start at the beginning.  So, you know how we've been talking about the secret part of our plan?  That secret was to knit charity items to use for yarn bombs (we got the idea from this yarn bomb which took place just last year in Ottawa, ON).

Cowl/Ear-Muff made by Knitting Wonder Woman,
Knitting Mermaid & KnitMama

We chose to yarn bomb these items in a high traffic area yesterday, just in time for some snowy weather to hit (that was just a coincidence!).  But we did choose the day because it was World Kindness Day... what a better way to spread some kindness!

We've got a selection of hats, mitts, cowls and scarves.  We hope that those in need can find their way to them to use.

And who knows, maybe we'll be leaving more... somewhere... sometime!  You'll have to stay tuned.  If you've been following the story in the past week, you'll know that you've seen pictures of some items that weren't left at the Salvation Army!

I'm Worried About The Tag - Guest Post By Knitting Mermaid

We have a big group tag coming up... soon.  Very soon!

The plan was to make a tag... a long knit piece.

I'm not sure if I will make it:

I need it to be about 15 inches... do you think it will get done on time?

Tuesday 11 November 2014

Its Almost Time!!!

We are getting even closer to our second group tag!  We are pretty exited!

The twist we talked about in our  last blog post is still a surprise. We cannot tell you what it is until after the tag.

Here are some more sneak peaks at what you'll see at our next tag.  Any guesses as to what they are?

A New Tag!!!

We are super close our big group tag and us Kninjas are really excited.  We're already making our labels to go with our tags.

Those teasers.. they are part of our our plan.

There is a twist to this yarn bomb though.  But we can only tell you  after  after the yarn bomb!

The Answer To #2

Hi!  A big secret will be revealed today!

Do you remember our last blog post?

Puzzle #1 is still a big secret, but puzzle #2 is yours to hear!

The answer to # 2 is... (drum roll please!) fingerless mitts!  Did any of you think that?

These are intended to fit an adult so I've got them rolled down a bit to fit my hands.
What do fingerless mitts have to do with yarn bombing?  You'll just have to keep posted to find out.

And.. we're going to tease you with more pictures for Puzzle #1.

What could these be???

Puzzling Puzzles

Hi! Are you ready to be puzzled? Well, I hope you are, because some of these questions are quite puzzling!

#1: What is long, warm, and wraps around your neck?

Some pictures to help you. You might prefer this near Christmas!

Although it sort of looks like a piece of earth, you would not want to wear this in summer!

This second one is a bit tricky!
#2: What is the perfect thing to keep your hands warm while driving?

These seem to be missing something. What could it be?

Comment with your answers!

Catch Up - Guest Post By KnitMama

It's KnitMama here... we've been having some difficulty keeping on top of our blog lately.  Between summer holidays, broken laptops and knitting things other than yarn bombs.. we've been busy.  Plus, Little Knitter is on the move and keeping us on our toes.  We're attempting to get back into the swing of it as we have an upcoming big tag planned (keep your eyes pealed!).

So.. we've got a few things to get caught up on.

First, back in the summer, KninjaNeedles8 teased you with a story about The Very Special Bird Feeder, but she never did get around to posting pictures of what the final home for that bird feeder was.  So, without further ado, here are some pictures.

Our hope is that soon we're going to see some evidence of birds having taken some pieces of yarn from this feeder and used it to help build their nest.  The potential of seeing nests with bits of colourful yarn in them is exciting!

Secondly, we missed making a big announcement.  In the summer time, we unfortunately had to say goodbye to some Kninjas.

Mother Of Purl, Purl-ice and TINKerbell had to move out of town.  They will be missed dearly.  The exciting thing about this is though that they are hoping to continue to be Knitting Kninjas in their new town (we'll soon be spreading like wildfire!)... and they've already brought a new member on board from their new town.  Soon we will see some work by our newest member, Stealthy Stitch Slipper.

Any guesses as to their new location?  Or as to when we might see some new yarn bombs popping up?

Lakefield Yarn Bomb

These look like some lovely garden decorations!

Now, you're probably wondering if we made this tag or not. And the answer is... we did not!

And from the other side

Well, let me tell you the story. We were just at the beach.  When we left, we saw a house that had a bunch of yarn bombs!

Look at this bright yarn bomb! It even  has a pom-pom!

This house is located in Lakefield, Ontario.
These are some nice ornaments!

An ornament close up.

It was nice that we got to see the house.  And we chatted with another yarn bomber (who promised to keep our identity a secret!).

Has anyone spotted any yarn bombs in their neighbourhood?

The Very Special Bird Feeder

How you think you make a bird feeder special?  What about put yarn in it and watch to see if birds take the yarn for a nest?  That's exactly what we did!

With all this yarn bombing and knitting going on, we have quite a lot of yarn scraps let over.

Then one day we came across this idea of what we could do with those scraps.

Things we needed:

A bird suet basket feeder.

A pile of yarn scraps.

Now... put the yarn into the basket feeder.

Check back for pictures of this lovely scrap yarn idea hanging in it's now new home.

A Double-Tag Day

On the same day that some Knitting Kninjas were in Confederation Park putting up tags, Stitchy Mama and Superknitter had something up their sleeves!

They headed out to Queen Elizabeth School to put up a tag on a tree in the school yard.  They were so sneaky about this.  We didn't know they were planning on doing it until we got the pictures sent to us!

Superknitter trying to remain secretive as he seams up the tag

This probably brightens up the school day for lots of students!

Our Apology

We want to apologize for not doing a blog entry for almost three weeks.  Obviously, this past month has been busier than typical.

We've been doing some activities, getting outside to enjoy some lovely spring weather (has anyone else been doing the 30x30 Nature Challenge?) and Little Knitter has been on the move keeping this knitting household busy.. and keeping us from knitting (and blogging!).

We've got so many things to get caught up on... but for today, we'll just show you the pictures from our big group tag all taken in the daylight.

Check back later this weekend though, we're reveal that surprise we hinted at!
